As bold and as bad as Belinda's defection was, David Emerson's has to be seen as at least a little bit worse.
After all, at least Belinda was able to spin a potentially plausible story about how she had high hopes for the Conservative Party but it seemed to be going in the wrong direction.
Okay, okay... Belinda's floor-crossing had horribly suspicious timing and was obviously designed with her career in mind. But Emerson can't even pretend to offer a credible explanation for why he ran in the January 23 election as a Liberal and was sworn in as a Conservative cabinet member on February 6. He can't even try to say that the Liberals turned out to be a different organization from what he hoped it would be, unless all he thought the Liberals were was "The Natural Governing Party" (AKA: The Emerson-in-Cabinet Party.
Some people are pretty upset by this. I'm more amused that Stephen Harper's cabinet includes a guy who (just two weeks earlier) said "I'm going to be Stephen Harper's worst enemy. We're going to stir the pot and you better believe we are going to make a heck of a lot of noise."
UPDATE: Just realized Calgary Grit made pretty much this same argument yesterday.
