Part of Tucker Carlson's controversial comments about Canada are actually true:
To some degree this is true. Canadians are hyper-sensitive about what Americans say or think about us. Why else would it be national news when we get mentioned on The Daily Show? Politically we're really into Americans, too. But this isn't just about Paul Martin scoring points by being tough (at critical moments) with George W. Bush. Right-wingers are just as obsessed with Americans and what they think of us. Looking in my archives I found a posting about a Toronto rally held just before the Iraq war. Stephen Harper, Ernie Eves and Mike Harris got together to say that we ought to be supporting "our best friend in the whole wide world"... pretty much for just that reason. Oh, and Carlson is also right about Americans not paying attention. Yet another US Senator is falsely claiming that the 9/11 hijackers entered the US from Canada. |
