The Star today had an article about a police sting operation in the Beaches that has been successful in catching bicycle thieves.
Apparently there has been a rash of thefts in the area, so police have set up bikes as lures and captured the thieves. There have been six arrests and two dozen charges.
The interesting thing is that "more serious charges, such as weapons possession and assault, often followed a complete investigation of those caught in the sting". So like the Broken Windows theory, cracking down on lesser crimes may help get more serious crooks of the street.
Now, I don't know if it will work, but anything that cuts down on the high level of bike thefts gets my support. Especially since it is pretty hard to ever catch a bicycle thief after the fact.
